You can’t run a marathon sitting on the sofa
Monday, January 15th, 2007Looks like Sage Media knows as much about marathon running as I do (see step #7)!
Seriously, though, they have a great article about setting goals for 2007. Sometimes I think that it’s better to conceive of your new year’s resolutions as goals, rather than resolutions. Doing this helps you focus on the end goal, rather than the behavior that you’ve resolved to engage in. While it can be hard sometimes to convince yourself of behavioral needs, like “I need to run every day,” keeping the end goal (in my case, a marathon!) in mind can help motivate you to do what you need to in order to accomplish your goals.
Sage Media also advises not to go it alone, noting that “We’re social creatures… even those of us who are more quiet and introverted rely on some element of social support to get us through our daily lives” and advising us to share our goals. I couldn’t agree more! I know I need to do a better job of getting the word out about my marathon goal. My family and some friends know, but I should talk about it more at work, too.
I generally don’t like to mix work and personal life, but when I have a strong personal goal like running the marathon, I think it’ll help a lot if my coworkers are hounding me to go running at lunch instead of hounding me to go out to eat with them. It’s not that I can never go out to lunch with coworkers anymore–it’ll just have to be a “sometimes” thing, instead of an “always” thing, but there’s nothing wrong with that.
Who are you going to share your goals with today? How will this help you achieve those goals?

Well, this is timely! As a matter of fact I shared my goal (quitting smoking) this morning with my oldest son, (who is also a smoker). He has agreed to try it along with me, which would really be an asset and another incentive for me to keep up with it.
