my new year’s resolution: become “sew” clever

k, i’ve finally got up the gumption (i’ve been using this word incessantly since watching “the holiday” with kate winslet–great movie, check it out!) to share my new year’s resolution. so here it is: in 2007, i will LEARN TO SEW!

i’ve wanted to make my own clothes for years now but have never really made the commitment. i’m frustrated with myself for constantly buying clothes, and i want to make some of my own clothing both to save money and look unique. i’m convinced 2007 is the year i’ll learn to sew for a couple of reasons:one, i’ve recently lost some weight–only about 15 pounds, but it’s enough so some of my clothes are a little baggy now. it’s a perfect excuse to create some new clothes for myself.

two, i’ve been telling everyone in my family and all of my friends about my resolution for weeks now, so i’ll definitely be feeling their wrath if i show up anywhere in store-bought clothes. sometimes there’s nothing like peer pressure!

three, my dear friend beth (an expert sewer… er, seamstress) is being really supportive. she bought me a nice sewing machine for christmas and has agreed to give me a few pointers on using it. lack of a sewing machine has been a bit of an obstacle to my sewing dreams in the past, but now i’m really set up to learn something.

four, i’ve signed up to take 8 weeks of sewing lessons at my local jo-ann fabrics. this should really help me get a jump start on some sewing skills, as well as help familiarize me with the fabrics and patterns available for my own projects.

since tracy tells us we need to set a specific goal that measures whether we’ve achieved our resolution, my goal is to go to my cousin’s high school graduation this june in a dress i’ve made myself!! i hope it works out. :)

It sounds like you are really organized this time around! You’ve taken really concrete steps towards your goal. Keep up the good work and let us know how you are doing with your lessons.

Sewing will open up a whole new world of opportunities for you! I took my first sewing class in May 2006, after my husband gave me a machine for Christmas 2005. And while I initially thought I would make TONS of clothes for my three kids, it ended up opening up this trickle of creativity I didn’t know I had. I am envious of people who sew all their clothes, but I use my machine mostly for crafts. The only bad thing is, I don’t have a lot of time. That’s the frustrating part. Good luck with the class - we’ll be watching for the pictures :-)
