Help

Okay, now you know the basic steps to posting on this New Year’s Resolutions blog. But what if you want to do a little more to your post? Here are some more tips for making the most of your blog posts.

Categorizing Posts

You can easily add a Category to your blog post. When you’re in the process of writing a post, just click the “+” Sign to the right of the Categories label at the right of the page, then select the checkbox by the category that best applies to your post (if you’re posting a resolution, please choose “New Year’s Resolutions”). If no existing category applies to your post, put CATEGORY: The Name Of The Category You’d Like To Add (for example, CATEGORY: Best Diet Plans) somewhere in your post, and we’ll add the right category for you.

Previewing Posts
If you want to see what your post will look like on the blog, choose “Save and Continue Editing” while you’re writing the post, then click the “preview” link at the upper right corner of the page. This will take you to a preview of your post. If you don’t like how something looks, you can re-format it. Just click the “edit” link at the upper right of the preview to go back up to editing the post.

Editing Posts
If you decide you want to edit a post after you’ve saved it, click the “Manage” link at the top of the WordPress Dashboard. Your post should show up under “Your Drafts” on the Manage Posts page. Just click on the name of the post you want to edit, make any necessary changes, and save the revised post.

IMPORTANT: You can’t edit your post after it’s been published, so please make sure it looks good before saving it! If for any reason your saved post isn’t ready to be published (maybe you want to come back and work on it later, or maybe you’re just playing with the site to see how it works), please write “DO NOT PUBLISH” at the top of your draft.

The “More” Tag
Ever wonder how people divide their blog posts so only a sentence or two shows up, and you have to click a link to read the full post? It’s all due to the magical “More” tag. Click the button in the posting toolbar that looks like a piece of paper that’s had the top third cut off (it’s to the left of a curvy blue arrow), and only the content above this tag will show up on the blog homepage. People will have to click on “Continue reading” to see the rest of your post. Note that if you don’t insert this tag yourself, the WordPress software will do it for you, so if you want to control where your post breaks, definitely make use of the “More” tag!

Deleting Drafts
If you created a draft that you no longer need, you can delete it. Just click the “Manage” link at the top of the WordPress Dashboard, and your draft should show up under “Your Drafts” on the Manage Posts page. Click the name of the draft you want to delete, then scroll down until you see the “Delete this page” button toward the left of the page. Click this button to delete your draft. Note that this will completely delete everything you’ve written, so definitely don’t use this option unless you’re sure you don’t want the post anymore!

Creating Links
If you want to link to another post on the New Year’s Resolutions blog, copy the URL (web address) of the link you want to use, then highlight the text in your post that you want to link to the other post. Once the text is highlighted, click the Link icon in the posting toolbar (it looks like some little chain links), then enter the URL in the resulting pop-up box.

Getting Help
If all else fails, click the round blue button with a white question mark in it at the top of the post-writing box. This will take you to a Help page that should answer some of your questions. If you still aren’t sure what’s up, just send me an email and I’ll see what I can do!
