Running to see the Queen Mary sail away!
Tuesday, February 6th, 2007I got to go on a cool “run” tonight — I went down to the waterfront to watch the Queen Mary 2 ocean liner set sail to Hawaii! I really wished I could have been on board, since I’ve never been to Hawaii and would love to experience the islands. Still, watching the ship’s departure with tons of other San Franciscans was a treat in itself!
I really enjoy events that bring people together to watch an interesting occurrence. (A ship setting sail might not sound that interesting, but the Queen Mary 2 was the largest ship ever to enter San Francisco Bay. Considering that thousands of ships must enter the bay every year, that’s something!)
It seems like the Super Bowl would be such an event, but even though I have plenty of respect for the efforts of professional athletes, I’m not big on super-fanatical dedication to sports. It just seems to me like America has become a nation of sports fans instead of sports participants, and I wish people would spend more time engaging in activity instead of just watching it. I personally didn’t feel any type of camaraderie during the Super Bowl, and definitely not the type I felt while watching the Queen Mary leave San Francisco.
Have you attended any events recently that made you feel a spirit of community? I think this spirit can be really lacking in our society, and I wish there were more ways to promote it! Running together is a really great way to do this, so I’ll have to step up my search for an area running club I can participate in…
