Running in the rain (and worse!)

I came across this great Runner’s World blog post by Kristin Armstrong about an intense run she had in some chilly (41 degrees!) rain. I was reminded of one run during my high school years when my track team got caught in a totally intense thunderstorm! We were about a mile out on a 5-mile route and thought our coach would be mad if we turned around, so we finished the course in pouring rain. Lightning flashed all around us, and the thunder was so loud you could feel the rumbling in your skin! The weather was fairly warm, so we weren’t too chilly–and of course running always warms you up.

In retrospect, it probably wasn’t real smart to be running in the middle of a storm, but it did make for a memorable experience. And I’m sure I would never run in a thunderstorm of my own volition, but having my team with me carried me through. I should probably look into joining a running group in the bay area to help keep me going toward my resolution. It’s hard to make it to group runs every day, but doing it a few times a week would probably be a good motivator for me. Definite thing for the to-do list!

That experience would have me paranoid about going out in the rain, ha ha! I have a healthy respect for lightning, having seen it hit my phone one time!
