A Positive Celebrity Resolution
Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007I thought this resolution, described in Women’s Wear Daily, was pretty sweet:
Ever-upbeat Men’s Health editor in chief David Zinczenko uses his January editor’s note to reflect on his resolution, which is magazine-wide. In an effort to combat obesity, the magazine will choose one school from reader submissions to adopt and furnish with proper physical education capabilities. [link]
Okay, so maybe the money would ideally go to textbooks instead of gym class, but I still think it’s noble to expand your business’s mission to include helping others. My company donates old computers to after-school programs, and I hope they’re getting good use. What are some good resolutions your company could make, or has made already?

Here in Maine, we have bottle deposits on all beverages. A nickel for soda and juices and fifteen cents for liquor. The schools usually have a bottle drive for their sports teams. So, I’m thinking along those lines, but on a grander scale.
Ideally, a company would have enough employees to make it profitable for a school or other charitable organization. Many places also offer premiums on returns, say, 6 cents instead of 5.
Of course, each employee would have to store their own returns, otherwise, it would have to be a pretty big room at work! Employees could choose to join the “Bottle Drive Plan” and agree to donate all of their refunds to the plan. The plan would have a specific goal in mind, e.g., video equipment for a school or some other worthy cause. If your boss is really generous, maybe he would be interested in making a matching gift! The deposits quickly add up and you’d be recycling and caring for Mother Earth at the same time as a bonus!
